Riviere garnered widespread acclaim from the Victorian audience due to his entertaining and often humorous depictions of animals. One of his most beloved works, 'Sympathy,' portrayed a young girl relegated to the stairs in disgrace, finding solace in the comforting presence of her dog. Although the initial rendition debuted at the Royal Academy in 1878, the displayed image is a preparatory study Riviere crafted for a subsequent version.

While Riviere demonstrated his mastery in painting historical scenes and portraits, it was his whimsical animal compositions that consistently resonated most strongly with the public. His enduring popularity rested on his skillful technique and the heartfelt connection audiences felt with his captivating portrayals of animal life.
